This was one of those weeks that make me proud to be a conservative. With all the happenings in politics this week (2000th US military death in Iraq, the Libby indictment, Miers withdrawal) finally we earn our "pay" through difficult times only to come out of it stronger than before.
The toll of the 2000th military death in Iraq on the American psyche is a liberal myth much like saying "guns kill people" which is like saying "pencils make spelling mistakes". The fact is after 2 1/2 years occupying Baghdad and much to the dismay of the left things are coming together in Iraq and it will be obvious within the next 6-8 months. This is great news for Republicans in 2006 because the Democrats election strategy like in 2004 is to turn Iraq into Vietnam. Things will turn just as primary season ends and the American people start paying close attention to current events.
The indictment of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is another reason for optimism on the right. Not only was the original law not broken but it's debatable as to whether perjury was committed and as usual, the courts will sort it out. But what is so extraordinary about it is the Prosecutor Fitzgerald was appointed by Bush to investigate. Not only did the President appoint a prosecutor who has vigorously investigated the crime of outing a covert agent but the indictment that came gave credibility to the prosecutor. When Libby is acquitted not only will the investigation truly be over but the liberals will have to stay silent because they supported this guy all throughout.
The Miers withdrawal was of course the best and most obvious news of the week. Now the family will come home together and get a Supreme Court nominee that Americans can be proud of. This is where the fight will be for good reason. John Roberts was a brilliant nomination and his confirmation was flawless. The democrats will not let this one go so easily so it will be a battle. The obvious argument is over abortion which is one that conservatives will win for one of two reasons. First, a substantial number of Americans (this blog included) believe that murdering unborn children is a capital offense that goes unpunished every single day. Second, there are a whole other set of Americans who believe that abortion is not necessarily wrong but the way it was made legal is and therefore should be overturned.
Until now 2005 has been a wash for a number of reasons but the stage appears to be set for a dynamite 2006. Despite what happens the rest of this year the conservative movement is stronger now than even after last year’s election. It's time to lead America where only conservatives can to a stronger more distinguished place.
